FACI worked with the Media Council of Kenya at a time when public confidence in media regulation was under strain. High-profile controversies, complaints about misinformation, and political pressure had placed the Council’s decisions under intense scrutiny.
FACI’s role was not to review individual cases, but to support the Council in reflecting on its regulatory posture, institutional legitimacy, and public-facing role. Through strategic dialogue with Council members and senior staff, FACI explored how regulatory decisions were communicated, justified, and understood by journalists, media houses, and the public.
The engagement examined internal governance dynamics, decision transparency, and the balance between regulation and protection of media freedom. FACI supported the Council to identify areas where processes could be clarified and where public communication could be strengthened without compromising independence.
The outcome was a more coherent regulatory narrative, improved internal alignment, and clearer articulation of the Council’s mandate. This helped reposition the Council as a credible, principled regulator capable of navigating ethical complexity in a rapidly evolving media environment.
